in other news- i have finally come to an end of my leg pain saga. well, the pain isn't gone, but i think i have FINALLY figured out the ins and outs of it. after i ran the 5k for Cooley Law school, I had chronic leg pain for almost a week. I continued running though because john told me that you have to "run off the pain". that didn't work. i finally made a dr. appt at our new dr. (which i love by the way) and she pretty much confirmed that i had shin splints which is what i went in there saying i had. she gave me some information on prevention, stretches, and exercises. she also told me about a store in east lansing called Playmakers, which is an athetic shoe and clothing store that has free running analysis work shops and athletic injury clinics. or something like that.
anyway, upon the advise of my dr. and my own logical thinking, i finally decided to invest in some actual running shoes to help prevent more shin splint pain. right after my appointment i headed down to playmakers and got myself a pair of really nice running shoes and inserts. apparrently i have a very high arch in my foot, and if that isn't supported right, it contributes to shin splints. it felt so nice to finally have something on my feet that supported every curve of my foot.so, still experiencing mild leg pain just from normal daily activity, john had me run with him that night in my new shoes. we wanted to see if the pain would go away. well, it didn't. i could barely run 2 miles. our goal is to run 3- and we do that 3 times a week. my legs were in such excruciating pain, that john finally helped me research it out a little more on the internet.
although everyone kept telling me that my pain was shin splints, i just never really bought into that because the pain is on the inside of my leg, not on the front on my actual shin. after doing some research, john helped me find out that i have something called posterior shin splints, which is pain on the inside of the leg, and not the front where the shin is. all the other causes and symptoms are the same. i finally believed i had shin splints.
after looking into other information, we finally both concluded that i should not be running in any way shape or form until my pain is completely gone- which will probably be a couple weeks at the least. for now i am biking or roller blading to the gym and doing my fat burning elyptical workout when i get there. at least i know i will have really nice running shoes waiting for me when i'm ready to go at it again.
aside from shin splints- some other interesting things have happened lately. first, daphne peed on me yesterday. we were at a dinner party for a friends birthday last night. i had daphne on my lap and she was sharing my dinner with me. she is usually really good at going potty in the toilet when we are away from home, but last night she just let it go all over me- completely saturating my dress. i felt her fart a couple times and then i just felt a huge dose of warm liquid run all over my lap. we had a change of clothes for daphne, but i was stuck rinsing my dress off in the sink of the friend's bathroom, and then drying it with her blow dryer. ya, it sucked. today though, she has not had one accident. and she is now pooping in the toilet 100% of the time. she is well on her way, we just need to make sure we are listening to her cues when she has to go.
ok- this is a gross picture, but oh well. after the dinner party last night, our friend invited everyone to go dancing on this 3 story boat. a lot of crazy things happened, but i surely don't remember this happening to my toe. i woke up and it was bloody with a chunk of my toenail missing.

our neighbors put up a fence. we're pretty friendly with them and talk all the time, so when i noticed they were digging huge holes and filling them with large white posts, i asked him what kind of fence he was putting in. he went on to tell me that it would be about 6 feet high and it's a privacy fence. a few days later, this is what has popped up. are we suppossed to take a hint from this?

john is blissfully sleeping on the couch as i type. we bbq'ed up some ribs for fathers day dinner accompanied with twice baked potatoes and carrots. yummy! he's probably stuffed and tired now. i really do want to wish john and happy fathers day. i hope it was a good one... daphne and love him very much. speaking of my beautiful daughter, here are some pictures of her from today!

I am a firm believer in Asics, just so you know. They are so awesome. Right now i have the Gel-1110's. Shin splints are awful! I hope you are better soon; you have inspired me to start running again, so I anxiously await your recovery!
I hope your legs are better soon!! Hopefully the new shoes work well. That's too funney that Daphne peed on you...Alaura hasn't done that yet, but she still refuses to go poop in the toilet. I don't know what to do about her...Looks like you guys are doing well and had a great fathers day!
It seems like you have had that pain for a long time. It's a good thing you have figured it out! Hope it gets better soon! Love all the pictures by the way. Daphne looks so grown up!
I used to get really bad shin splints when I played football. I got heel inserts that helped a little bit. But the only thing that work everytime was after practice each day I would stick me entire forelegs into a whirlpool of ice cold water and let them soak for ~20 minutes. After doing that for most of the season I have never gotten shin splints again. While I don't have the medical explanation for why it "cured" me, it is an actual experience. You might try just heavily icing you legs after everytime you run. My shin splints were both anterior and posterior (on the outside and inside).
