john and i had a fun trip to detroit yesterday. we left daphne with our friends the taylors (who were so awesome to watch daphne for about 12 hours!) and drove off to detroit to watch The Rentals play a show. john also really wanted to eat at this restaurant that we ate at the last time we were in detroit. its an italian restaurant in greek town of downtown detroit that makes pizzas. well, the last time we went there we didn't want to wait for pizza because it takes like 30-45 minutes, so we just ordered calzones. john has talked about this place for months now saying how he just wants to go there and order a pepperoni pizza. so, that was his big plan. so we left kind of early from lansing so we could get dinner at this italian restaurant before the show.
we got to detroit, and we noticed that there was a car show going on, AND a baseball game. so downtown was packed. we drove to the venue where the rentals were going to play. it was just a little north of the middle of downtown, and the greek town italian restaurant was right in downtown, where all the business was happening. we bought the tickets for the show, and it was still only like 5 o clock. doors didn't open until 7, and there were two warm up bands. so after walking around for a little while, and finding The Renatls tour bus, we decided to drive back to greektown/downtown and eat at the restaurant. i was trying to tell john that maybe we should just keep our car parked at the venue-since we had a killer spot, and just walk around and find a place to eat there. i didn't feel like driving around again and eating at the same place we ate at last time we were in detroit. but, i let john drive us back to downtown so we could find the italian restaurant. after getting lost for a brief little bit, we found greek town. but what we couldn't find was a parking spot anywhere. every single parking spot, that we wouldn't have to pay $30 for, was taken. after john felt defeated, we drove back to the venue (an hour later). it was at this time that john kept saying "i hate detroit".

(I made john make a sad face when he realized we would not be eating at the italian restaurant.)
we knew there was a mcd's across the street, but we wanted to find something a little more detroity. low and behold, there was a cool bar/restaurant/bowling alley right next the majestic theater (the venue). AND they sold pizza by the slice. we got some pizza and john was very happy. AND it was like, the best pizza ever. what are the odds?

(then i made john do a happy face, unfortunately my flash didn't catch the whole enthusiasm of it)

the place had a cool ceiling

john was hungry enough to eat a car! haha

after the pizza we went next door to the venue to stand in line because it was almost 7. well the doors didn't open until almost 8, and the first band didn't play until almost 9. what's up with that? we thought it was pretty gay, but had a lot of fun talking about interesting things at this cute little table in the back. the venue was pretty cool on the inside. it was old and falling apart, but the stage was pretty big, and they had these cool neon signs all over.

inside the venue

we liked the first band, they were good enough to get us away from the table and out onto the floor. the next band was... weird. the lead singer was really creepy looking when he played. i couldn't concentrate on the music, i pretty much laughed at the lead singer the whole time. but here music was really mellow, and it made me go sit back down so i could save my energy for The Rentals.

i know these are blurry, i consider it artistic!

Well, The Rentals played. they were really awesome. this was our second time seeing them. i was really happy to have witnessed them play the songs: barcelona, i just threw out the love of my dreams, and getting by - which were three of my favs and three songs they didn't play at their last show that we saw a year ago.

i also realized just how weird this band is. there's the drummer, who just doesn't look like your normal band drummer. he looks more like a child molester. theres a guy who plays synths in the back with a really dated 80's mustache. then theres rachel- who is this petite girl with a shaved head, lauren- who is another girl who plays the violin and wears clothes that don't match, and sara- who is very pretty and reminds me of audrey hepburn. and then there's freakin matt sharp. i can't even say how weird he is. he cracked me up the whole night, it was awesome.
i also must say that this show opened my eyes to the fact that some of these people might be gay. i'm actually pretty positive that the lead singer for the second band- copeland- is gay... among others. anyway. also, john and i are still puzzled by the fact that matt sharp wears this black spandex looking long sleeved shirt under his regular shirt when he performs. i don't get it. it doesn't even look cool.
the band did a meet and greet after the show, just like last time. which i think is really cool. i was really bumbed though because right at the end of the show my camera died. so even if we did go and say "hi" to the band, we couldn't have taken any pictures. so, we didn't make it a point to go oogle over the band at this time. but john did go and have all the members sign his ticket stub- and managed to have a really awkward moment with lauren from the band- which was hilarious. AND matt sharp had changed his shirt and wasn't wearing the black spandex type shirt. it's bizarre, i still don't get it.
so, we were finally on our way out at like 1 am i think. we had to stop and get double whoppers though because we were hungry. i would have taken pictures of this, but like i said before, my camera was dead. those double whoppers were huge.
so anyway. that was our fun trip. i really enjoyed it. it makes me want to go to more shows though because they are so fun.
since we didn't get to bed until after 3 am, we weren't able to wake up in time for church. john took his last final (yay), and we have been enjoying 60 degree whether all day today! it was so awesome.
we are leaving for portland next monday. i am so stoked about that. i will be sure to take lots of pictures, AND bring my battery charger. that is all at this time.
cheers
p.s. i apologize for the poor quality of some of the pictures. i usually have photoshop
to fix all that, but we don't have it anymore. hopefully we'll be getting it soon.
